In the latest installment of Nintendo’s Creator’s Voice series, Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of the Final Fantasy Remake series, announced that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is set to launch on the upcoming Switch 2. This news excites fans who have been eager to experience the game on Nintendo’s new handheld platform.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is an enhanced version of the 2020 PS4 title, Final Fantasy VII Remake, which serves as the opening chapter in a planned trilogy that significantly expands on the iconic 1997 PS1 RPG, Final Fantasy VII. The Intergrade edition, available on PS5 and PC, features upgraded graphics and lighting, along with the Intermission DLC, which introduces the character Yuffie and her adventures in Midgar.
Hamaguchi emphasized that the capabilities of the Switch 2 will allow the game to be presented at full specifications. "With the power of the Switch 2, we can now recreate Midgar with full specs," he stated. This development is particularly exciting for players who value portability. "Being able to play this game on the Switch 2 in handheld mode means you can play it on the train while commuting to work," Hamaguchi added, highlighting the convenience of playing on the go and sharing the experience with others.
The Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade will also feature GameChat, allowing players to communicate with friends during gameplay and share their screens in real time. Hamaguchi expressed his enthusiasm for the game's portable version, stating, "I’m very excited to see this game playable on a portable system," and expressed optimism about fostering a strong partnership between Nintendo and the Final Fantasy brand.
While only Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade has been confirmed for the Switch 2 so far, Hamaguchi hinted at future releases, saying, "I hope players are looking forward to the Final Fantasy VII Remake series on Switch 2." This suggests that subsequent entries, such as Rebirth and the final installment of the trilogy, might also make their way to the Switch 2.
It's worth noting that the Final Fantasy series originally debuted on Nintendo consoles before transitioning to the PlayStation 1 with Final Fantasy VII, the first 3D entry in the series. With the remake, fans will finally be able to enjoy Final Fantasy VII on Nintendo hardware once again.
