After the triumph of Fantasian Neo Dimension, Hironobu Sakaguchi has announced his intention to develop a game that he hopes will serve as a spiritual successor to the beloved Final Fantasy 6. In a recent interview with The Verge, Sakaguchi revealed that he initially intended Fantasian to be his final project before retiring. Yet, the joy of working with an exceptional team on Fantasian has reignited his passion, prompting him to embark on this new journey. He describes the upcoming game as "part two of my farewell note," aiming to blend the old with the new in a unique fantasy RPG experience.

In a 2024 interview with Famitsu, Sakaguchi confirmed his active involvement in a new project, sharing that he completed the script about a year ago and anticipates reaching a significant milestone within two years. The excitement around this project escalated in June 2024 when Mistwalker filed a trademark for "FANTASIAN DARK AGE," hinting at a possible sequel. While the game will maintain the fantasy RPG style synonymous with Sakaguchi's previous works, details about its title and further information remain under wraps.

The collaboration between Mistwalker and Square Enix brought FANTASIAN Neo Dimension to a broader audience across PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch in December 2024. Originally launched exclusively on Apple Arcade in 2021, Fantasian received widespread acclaim and was hailed as one of the platform's top games. Reflecting on this partnership, Sakaguchi expressed that returning to Square Enix, where he began his career in 1983, felt like coming full circle. His journey with Square Enix saw him direct the first five Final Fantasy games and produce titles from Final Fantasy 6 to Final Fantasy 11 before founding Mistwalker in 2003. Despite this reunion, Sakaguchi remains focused on new creations, having no interest in revisiting his past works, and has transitioned from a creator to a consumer in the gaming world.
