Meta Quest 3 Exclusivity and Developer Statements

2K Games and Firaxis Games revealed the VR version at the Civ World Summit on February 8, 2025. Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer, expressed excitement for this "new era of strategy excellence." Chris Pruett, Meta's Director of Games, highlighted the timing, stating that Civ VII VR showcases the momentum in mixed reality gaming and provides a "genuine Civ experience" for dedicated strategy players. Noteworthy is the absence of a PSVR2 release, despite Civ VII's presence on PlayStation consoles.

Immersive Gameplay and Multiplayer Options

Civ VII VR offers a unique tabletop-style experience. Players command from a virtual "Command Table," allowing close inspection of details or a broader strategic overview. The game supports both virtual and mixed reality modes, seamlessly switching between immersive VR and the blended reality of MR, adapting to the player's physical environment.

The game features single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer for up to four players with Meta Quest 3/3S headsets. Players can team up against AI opponents or compete head-to-head. The online multiplayer component requires 2K and Meta accounts.

Firaxis Games is actively addressing player feedback from the early access period (February 6th, 2025, for Deluxe/Founder's Editions). The team acknowledged concerns regarding the user interface (UI) on Steam, promising improvements to map readability, interaction intuitiveness, and overall polish. Future updates include community-requested features like multiplayer teams and diverse map types. A quality-of-life update in March will focus on UI adjustments, AI balancing, diplomacy refinements, and bug fixes.
