Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting!
The highly anticipated Patch 7 for Baldur's Gate 3 has arrived, and the player response has been phenomenal, especially regarding the modding scene. The sheer volume of mods is staggering.
Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke announced on X (formerly Twitter) that over one million mods were installed within 24 hours of Patch 7's September 5th release. "Modding is pretty big," Vincke tweeted. This number was later surpassed, with mod.io founder Scott Reismanis reporting over 3 million installs and counting.
This explosion of modding activity is fueled by Patch 7's introduction of several key features, including new evil endings, improved split-screen, and Larian's official Mod Manager. This integrated tool simplifies browsing, installing, and managing mods directly within the game.
The existing modding tools, available separately on Steam, utilize Larian's Osiris scripting language, allowing modders to craft custom stories, scripts, and even perform basic debugging. Mods can be published directly from the toolkit.
Expanding Modding Horizons: Cross-Platform Compatibility
PC Gamer highlighted a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (by modder Siegfre on Nexus) which unlocks a full level editor and reactivates previously disabled features in Larian's editor. While Larian has been cautious about full tool access ("We are a game development company, not a tools company," Vincke stated previously), the community is clearly embracing the available tools.
Larian is actively pursuing cross-platform modding, a significant undertaking. "It's not the easiest thing," Vincke acknowledged, citing the complexities of ensuring compatibility across PC and consoles. The PC version will receive support first, with console support following after testing and certification processes.
Beyond Modding: Patch 7's Enhancements
Patch 7 isn't solely focused on modding. It also includes UI improvements, new animations, expanded dialogue options, and numerous bug fixes and performance enhancements. With further updates planned, the future looks bright for Baldur's Gate 3 and its thriving modding community.
