How to Beat The Battle of Hulao Gate in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

The iconic Battle of Hulao Gate in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins* is a challenging but rewarding experience. This guide will walk you through conquering this pivotal stage in Chapter 2, where your objective is to defeat Dong Zhuo.

The mission begins with four enemy bases in the map's bottom right. Conquering two triggers a cutscene introducing mounted cavalry. Defeat them strategically as you continue securing the remaining bases. Defeating Zhang Liao, the cavalry commander, rewards you with the twin pike weapon.

With all bases secured, assault Hulao Gate. This initiates a major battle against Dong Zhuo's forces. Your priority is protecting Cao Cao until he unleashes his Grand Tactic, weakening the defenses and paving your way forward.

Lu Bu's Appearance

Dong Zhuo deploys Lu Bu. Avoid direct confrontation; he's overwhelmingly powerful. Instead, focus on eliminating officers near the main battle to maintain morale, as Lu Bu's presence significantly depletes it. Lu Bu will eventually attack your main base to confront Yuan Shao. Resist the urge to pursue him; Liu Bei's forces will hold him off, giving you time to defeat Dong Zhuo. This creates a time constraint—once Liu Bei's forces retreat, you must be close to defeating Dong Zhuo to avoid mission failure.

Defeating Dong Zhuo

After Lu Bu's departure, resupply at a conquered base if needed. Then, capture the northern and western bases. With all three squads ready, and fully healed, charge towards Dong Zhuo's commander's circle. Dong Zhuo will initiate a Grand Tactic involving fireballs. Destroy the front two catapults to end it. Use Musou Rage if available to break through enemy lines protecting the catapults.

Dong Zhuo will launch another Grand Tactic. Defeat an officer to counter it. You'll encounter Diaochan, who has joined Dong Zhuo. A duel with her is challenging but rewarding, as defeating her reduces the subsequent fight's difficulty. Once the Grand Tactic is over, the path to Dong Zhuo is clear. Your forces should overwhelm his remaining troops, and Dian Wei might even initiate a Grand Tactic in your favor. Defeat Dong Zhuo to complete the mission.
