Aptoide, the independent app store, is now freely available on iOS for EU users. While claiming to be the first free alternative app store on iOS, the Epic Games Store actually launched first. However, Aptoide may be the first general, third-party storefront.
If you've sought iOS App Store alternatives, your options have been limited due to Apple's tight control. However, following legal battles and the Epic Games Store's iOS arrival last year, Aptoide has entered the market. We previously covered Aptoide's beta in mid-2024, but now all EU iOS users can download it for free.
Aptoide's claim of being the first alternative storefront is debatable, as the Epic Games Store preceded it (in full release). However, Aptoide distinguishes itself with a wider range of apps beyond gaming. A unique feature allows users to select specific app versions—a capability previously exclusive to Android users.
While the above might seem skeptical, Aptoide has a strong case for being first, especially considering its beta period. The Epic Games Store, while not owned by Apple or Google, is still operated by a major industry player. Aptoide represents a truly independent alternative.
