Tarneeb, widely recognized in Arab countries, especially in the Levant, is a popular card game known as "rule" in the Arab Gulf states. The primary goal of Tarneeb is to win consecutive rounds of play. The game involves four players divided into two teams, with each team consisting of two partners seated opposite each other. The competition continues through the rounds until a winning team is declared.

Tarneeb is played with a standard 52-card deck, excluding the Jokers. The gameplay begins with the player to the left of the dealer making the first move. The game progresses in a clockwise direction, with each player taking turns to play their cards.

The distribution of cards starts from the dealer's right. The bidding process begins with the player to the dealer's right, and bids range from 7 to 13, known as "Cabot" or "livers." The highest bidder chooses the Tarneeb suit, which becomes the trump suit for that round.

If a team fails to meet their bid, they incur a penalty. For example, if a team bids for 10 tricks but only wins 9, they lose points equivalent to the number of tricks they bid for (10 points), while the opposing team gains points for the tricks they won, which in this case would be 4 points. If the opposing team wins 5 tricks, any discrepancies or cheating are revealed.

The game concludes when one of the teams reaches a predetermined score, either 61 or 31 points, depending on the agreement made before the start of the game.

The card hierarchy in Tarneeb is as follows, from highest to lowest:

  • A (Ace or Cut)
  • K (King or Sheikh)
  • Q (Queen or Girl)
  • J (Jack or Born)
  • Then descending from 10 to 2
