Russian Checkers 8×8

In Russian checkers, white begins the game, and all moves occur on dark squares. A key rule is the mandatory capture: if a capture is possible, it must be made. Captures can be executed both forward and backward. Kings have the liberty to move and capture along any diagonal. The Turkish strike rule applies, meaning you can only capture one opponent's piece per move. If multiple captures are available, you may choose any, not necessarily the longest one. Upon reaching the opponent's edge, a checker becomes a king and can immediately act as one if possible.

A draw is declared under several conditions, including:

  • When a player with checkers and three or more kings faces a single opponent's king and fails to capture it within 15 moves after the balance of forces is established.
  • In positions where both players have kings and the balance of forces remains unchanged for 30 moves in 4 and 5 piece endings, or 60 moves in 6 and 7 piece endings.
  • If a player with three pieces (in any combination) against an opponent's single king on the "high road" cannot capture it within 5 moves.
  • After 15 moves where only kings are moved without any captures or promotions.
  • If the same position repeats three or more times with the same player's turn.

International Checkers 10×10

International checkers also start with white on dark squares, with mandatory captures that can be made in both directions. Kings have the same extensive movement and capture rights as in Russian checkers. The Turkish strike rule applies here as well. However, the majority rule dictates that if multiple captures are possible, you must choose the one that captures the most pieces. A unique rule is that if a simple checker reaches the opponent's edge during a capture, it continues as a simple checker without becoming a king until the capture ends. If it reaches the edge by a regular move, it turns into a king and stops, resuming as a king on the next turn.
