Taiko Virtual

Taiko are a diverse family of Japanese percussion drums. In Japanese, "taiko" is the generic word for drum, but internationally, it's commonly understood to mean the traditional Japanese drums known as wadaiko, and the dynamic ensemble drumming style called kumi-daiko. The craftsmanship behind taiko varies by maker, with both the drum body and skin preparation sometimes requiring years of meticulous work.

Taiko's roots are found in Japanese myth, though historical evidence points to their introduction from Korea and China around the 6th century CE. Certain taiko share similarities with instruments from India. Archaeological findings confirm their presence in Japan during the 6th-century Kofun period. Their role has evolved through history—from communication and warfare to theater, religious rites, festivals, and concert performances. In contemporary society, taiko have also become powerful instruments for social activism among minority groups in and outside Japan.

Kumi-daiko, the ensemble style featuring multiple drums, was pioneered in 1951 by Daihachi Oguchi and evolved with groups like Kodo. Other styles, such as hachijō-daiko, originated within specific Japanese communities. Today, kumi-daiko groups are thriving not just in Japan, but across the United States, Australia, Canada, Europe, Taiwan, and Brazil. Taiko performance blends many elements: rhythmic technique, form, stick grips, attire, and specific instrumentation. Ensembles often use various barrel-shaped nagadō-daiko and smaller shime-daiko, frequently accompanied by vocals, string, and woodwind instruments.
