Xbox Ally Announced Through ASUS ROG Partnership at SGF 2025
Scheduled for Holiday 2025 Release!
Microsoft surprised audiences at their 2025 showcase by introducing two Xbox-branded handhelds developed in partnership with ASUS. Named the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X, these devices combine Xbox's ecosystem with Windows functionality in a portable format. The presentation included gameplay footage of Hollow Knight: Silksong running on the device - confirming both the console's capabilities and the game's long-awaited existence.
Developed under Microsoft and ASUS' Project Kennan initiative, both models feature a custom Xbox interface optimized for handheld use. The systems boot directly into a full-screen dashboard showcasing games from Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games Store, and other PC storefronts.
The white Xbox Ally serves as the entry-level model with specs targeting 720p gaming. It includes AMD's Ryzen Z2 A chip, 16GB LPDDR5X RAM, and 512GB SSD storage.
The premium black Xbox Ally X model boosts performance for 900p-1080p gaming with AMD's Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor (featuring a 50 TOPS NPU), 24GB RAM, and 1TB SSD - all while sporting a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz display.
Microsoft's Shawn Yen highlighted that "efficiency is our superpower" for this hardware generation. The Ally X includes an industry-leading 80Wh battery, while the standard model features a 60Wh capacity - a significant 50% improvement over the original ROG Ally. Combined with a streamlined Windows 11 interface, both devices promise extended play sessions.
The Silksong gameplay demo created the showcase's biggest reaction, showcasing how these high-performance handhelds could reshape mobile PC gaming. With premium hardware, console-optimized UI, and flagship game demonstrations, Microsoft has positioned the Xbox Ally series as serious competition in the handheld PC market.
