World of Warcraft's Corrupted Blood Bug Returns in Season of Discovery
The infamous Corrupted Blood incident, a notorious chapter in World of Warcraft history, has unexpectedly reappeared in the Season of Discovery servers. Players have shared videos showcasing the deadly plague spreading through major cities, mirroring the chaotic events of 2005. While some players found the situation amusing, others voiced concerns about the potential impact on Hardcore realms.
The source of the resurgence is the Zul'Gurub raid, reintroduced in Phase 5 of Season of Discovery (September 2024). This 20-player instance, originally part of Patch 1.7 (Rise of the Blood God, September 2005), features Hakkar the Soulflayer, whose Corrupted Blood spell deals damage over time and spreads to nearby players. Normally, this damage is manageable with strong healing, but the bug allows for uncontrolled spread.
A video posted on r/classicwow by user Lightstruckx vividly demonstrates the issue. The 20-second clip shows Corrupted Blood rapidly decimating players in Stormwind City's Trade District, strikingly similar to the 2005 incident where "pet bombs" were used to spread the plague. Lightstruckx's video shows the frantic use of healing spells to survive the rapidly spreading debuff.
Accidental Recreation and Hardcore Concerns
The return of Corrupted Blood has sparked debate. Some players attribute it to unresolved issues, while others worry about its potential weaponization in Hardcore realms, where character death is permanent. The difference between Season of Discovery and the permadeath nature of Classic Hardcore significantly raises the stakes.
Despite past attempts to address the issue, the Corrupted Blood legacy persists. With Phase 7 of Season of Discovery slated for early 2025, the timing of Blizzard's fix remains uncertain.
