Wizards of the Coast has taken down a fan-created mod for Stardew Valley named "Baldur's Village," which integrated characters from Baldur's Gate 3 into the farming simulation game. This action followed a positive public endorsement from Larian Studios CEO Sven Vincke, who had praised the mod on Twitter shortly after its release earlier this month.
The mod's removal came after Wizards of the Coast, the rights holder for Dungeons & Dragons and Baldur's Gate, issued a DMCA takedown notice. A spokesperson from Nexus Mods expressed hope that this might be an oversight by Wizards of the Coast, suggesting that the decision could be reversed.
In response to the takedown, Vincke took to Twitter again to voice his support for the mod while acknowledging the complexities of IP protection. He highlighted the value of fan mods as a testament to the resonance of the original work and suggested that such creations should not be treated as commercial infringements. Vincke expressed hope for a resolution, indicating that there are better ways to handle such situations.
This incident may be part of a broader initiative by Wizards of the Coast concerning the Baldur's Gate IP. At the recent Game Developers Conference, it was hinted that more announcements regarding the IP are expected soon. It remains unclear whether the Stardew Valley mod conflicted with these plans or if the takedown was an error. Wizards of the Coast has been contacted for further comment on the matter.
