Upgrade Prerequisites:

Before upgrading, acquire the Staff of Ice itself, either from the Mystery Box or by assembling its three parts. Early access to the Dark Aether Nexus, achieved by opening the Door to Nowhere, is crucial.

Upgrade Steps:

Step 1: Freezing Dark Aether Crystals

Freeze three Dark Aether Crystals consecutively using the Staff of Ice. For optimal speed, utilize Stamin-Up and/or PHD Flopper with the Tribologist Minor Augment. Strategically choose your route, potentially waiting a few rounds for favorable lantern spawns. A recommended route involves the tomb area, the Shrine of the Hierophants, and the lantern near the Subterranean Temple entrance (avoiding the one near Quick Revive due to distance). Successful completion triggers a quote from Archibald, signaling progression to the Dark Aether Nexus.

Step 2: Targeting Floating Runes

Within the Dark Aether Nexus, locate three floating rocks with glowing purple Runes. Each Rune displays a unique symbol. Shoot each Rune with the Staff of Ice (a hitmarker confirms success). This lowers the rock, improving visibility. A sniper rifle might aid accuracy. The order of shooting is inconsequential.

Step 3: Solving the Rune Puzzle

A stone wall replaces a portal in the Dark Aether Nexus. Return to the corresponding map area. Locate a wall with Runic icons; three match the symbols from the floating rocks. Shoot these three with the Staff of Ice. The portal will reappear, regardless of accuracy. Incorrect symbols teleport you back to the Nexus from a high altitude. If unsuccessful, wait for the next round. Correct symbols lead to a floating rock and a purple orb. Interact with the orb.

Step 4: Escorting the Soul Chest Orb

The activated orb moves; follow it and kill zombies nearby. Killed zombies' essence fuels the orb's movement. Guide the orb to the central Nexus structure, where a small purple portal forms. Interact with the portal to upgrade the Staff of Ice to Ull's Arrow.
