NieR: Automata Chapter Select: A Guide to Unlocking and Using It

NieR: Automata offers a vast world to explore, filled with main story missions and numerous side quests. Many players might miss content during their initial playthrough. Fear not! Chapter Select allows you to revisit previous sections after completing the game. This guide explains how to unlock and utilize this feature.

Note: This guide contains minor spoilers regarding the true ending.

How to Unlock Chapter Select in NieR: Automata

Unlocking Chapter Select requires completing one of the game's true endings. This involves finishing all three playthroughs and selecting a specific ending during the final confrontation of the third playthrough. While referred to as playthroughs, many consider them chapters due to their individual story arcs.

After viewing the credits of a playthrough, save your game. Load that save file to begin the next section with a new character. The final playthrough involves switching between multiple characters. Successfully completing this final playthrough will unlock Chapter Select for that save file.

How Chapter Select Works in NieR: Automata

Access Chapter Select from two locations:

  • The main menu of your save file when loading the game.
  • Any access point within the game world.

The menu lets you select any chapter to revisit. Your progress, including weapons, level, and items, carries over. You can also choose the character you wish to play as, provided that chapter featured multiple playable characters.

Important Considerations:

  • Completed side quests cannot be repeated, regardless of the chapter selected.
  • Always save at an access point when switching chapters. Failing to do so will result in the loss of any progress (levels and items) made in the current chapter.

Chapter Select is invaluable for completing all content, revisiting choices, and pursuing all possible endings.
