Tekken 8 Director Slams Fan Over Anna Williams' New Look: 'Unconstructive and Pointless'

By AmeliaMay 16,2025

The return of veteran fighter Anna Williams in Tekken 8 has sparked a range of reactions among fans, particularly regarding her new design. While many are embracing the changes, a vocal minority has drawn comparisons to Santa Claus due to her outfit's red coat and white fur trims. This debate reached a boiling point when a fan requested the return of Anna's previous design, prompting a sharp response from Tekken's game director and chief producer, Katsuhiro Harada.

Harada defended the new design, emphasizing that 98% of fans have welcomed it. He addressed the critic directly, stating, "If you prefer the old design, I am not taking those away from you." He further criticized the fan for claiming to represent all Anna fans and for making unconstructive and disrespectful comments. Harada's frustration was evident when he muted another commenter who criticized the lack of rereleases of older games with modern netcode, calling the comment "pointless" and the user "a joke."

Despite the controversy, the majority of the feedback on Anna's new look has been positive. Fans like AngryBreadRevolution appreciate the edgier and more vengeful persona the new design conveys, though some adjustments, like the hair, are still growing on them. Others, such as troonpins and Cheap_Ad4756, have mixed feelings; while they enjoy elements like the leotard, tights, boots, and gloves, the coat's resemblance to Santa Claus and the youthful appearance of Anna have drawn criticism. Spiralqq went as far as to call the design "horrible," criticizing its overdesigned nature and lack of focus.

Amidst the design debate, Tekken 8 continues to enjoy commercial success, having sold 3 million copies within a year of its release, outpacing Tekken 7, which took a decade to reach 12 million units. IGN's review praised Tekken 8, awarding it a 9/10 and highlighting its innovative fighting systems, diverse offline modes, new characters, robust training tools, and enhanced online experience, cementing its status as a standout title in the franchise.
