The Pokémon Trading Card Game (PTCGO) Space Time Smackdown expansion, released January 30th, features a Weavile ex card depicting a disturbing scene that has sparked outrage among players. Specifically, the 2-Star full art card shows a group of Weavile poised to attack a defenseless Swinub.
This depiction of predation has generated considerable negative feedback online. Reddit posts highlighting the artwork have garnered thousands of upvotes, with comments expressing concern and disapproval of the graphic nature of the card. Many players expressed their sympathy for the Swinub and criticized the portrayal of Pokémon violence.
However, some fans are offering a more optimistic interpretation. They point to the Mamoswine full art card, Swinub's evolution, which shows Mamoswine protectively looking upward, suggesting it may have witnessed and prevented the Weavile's attack. This hopeful counter-narrative has provided a small measure of comfort to some players.
The Space Time Smackdown expansion, themed around Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, includes 207 cards – fewer than the 286 in Genetic Apex but with a higher percentage (52 vs. 60) of alternate art, Star, and Crown rarity cards. The expansion features popular Pokémon like Weavile, Mamoswine, Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina.
Despite the controversy, Creatures Inc. has yet to address the negative player reaction. While a "Trade Feature Celebration Gift" offering 500 Trade Tokens and 120 Trade Hourglasses was provided, the company has remained silent on social media and has not responded to press inquiries regarding the artwork's depiction of violence. The lack of response has further fueled fan frustration.
