Reviews & Mini-Views
Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)
The Nintendo Switch has given us second chances at some classic games. Trials of Mana, Live A Live, the original Fire Emblem... and now, the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection! This set includes Miles Edgeworth's adventures, finally fully localized in English. The sequel builds brilliantly on the original's plot, making the first game even better in retrospect.
The Investigations games offer a fresh perspective, showing the prosecution's side. Gameplay remains largely the same—searching for clues, questioning witnesses—but the presentation is unique and engaging. Edgeworth as the protagonist gives the narrative a distinct feel. The pacing can sometimes feel uneven, but fans of the main series will love this spin-off. If you find the first game a bit slow, persevere—the second is significantly better.
Bonus features are generous, including an art and music gallery, a story mode, and the option to switch between original and updated graphics/soundtracks. A dialog history feature is a welcome addition.
The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection offers a compelling experience. The localization of the second game is fantastic, and the extras make this a must-have for Ace Attorney fans. With this release, every Ace Attorney game (excluding the Professor Layton crossover) is now available on Switch.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)
A sequel to Gimmick! is unexpected, but welcome! Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful sequel stays true to the original, perhaps even too much for some. Six lengthy, challenging physics-based platforming levels await. An easier mode is included for those seeking a less demanding experience.
Yumetaro's star attack returns, serving as weapon, vehicle, and puzzle solver. Collectibles add replayability, unlocking customization options. The game is tough, but generous checkpointing prevents frustration from overwhelming the fun. The charming visuals and music add to the experience.
While not excessively long, Gimmick! 2 maintains the original's challenging spirit. Expect to die often, but the rewarding gameplay and clever use of mechanics make it worthwhile. Fans of the original and challenging platformers will be delighted. However, casual players should be warned—this is not an easy game.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)
Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a risk, shifting from action-platforming to a shoot 'em up style. Surprisingly, it works well, though the Switch's hardware struggles at times. Despite performance limitations, the intense action, rocking soundtrack, and creepy visuals make it an enjoyable experience.
The weapon system is a highlight, requiring skillful management of the gun, melee weapon, and rotating third weapon. The dash mechanic adds to the strategic depth. Mastering the rhythm of weapon switching and dodging is key to success.
While different from the original, Mecha Therion retains the same atmosphere. It's a stylish, heavy metal shoot 'em up that avoids genre clichés. While other platforms offer better performance, the Switch version is still a worthwhile experience.
SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)
Licensed games are often fan service, and this one delivers for Umamusume fans. The writing and meta-systems cater to existing fans. However, the game lacks depth for non-fans. A small selection of repetitive mini-games and a story only fans will fully appreciate limit its appeal.
Even for fans, the game's focus feels misplaced. While the presentation is excellent and unlockables are plentiful, the limited gameplay will likely lead to burnout quickly.
SwitchArcade Score: 3/5
Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)
This collection showcases Sunsoft's lesser-known 8-bit games, featuring Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. All three are fully localized, a significant achievement. The package includes save states, rewind, display options, and art galleries.
The games themselves are a mixed bag. 53 Stations is frustrating but charming; Ripple Island is a decent adventure; and The Wing of Madoola is ambitious but uneven. None are groundbreaking, but they're enjoyable for fans of retro gaming and Sunsoft's catalog.
