Following my exploration of the best Switch party games in 2024, the exceptional release of Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club inspired me to compile a list of the top visual novels and adventure games currently available on the Switch. This encompasses both pure visual novels and adventure games with visual novel elements. The selection spans various regions and release years, offering a diverse range of experiences. As always, the order is arbitrary.
Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club ($49.99) + Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection
Nintendo's 2021 remakes of the Famicom Detective Club games were a revelation. The addition of Emio – The Smiling Man in 2024, available physically and digitally, is a stunning achievement. It feels like a genuine sequel, though this might not appeal to all. The production values are exceptional, and the shockingly good ending fully justifies its M rating. Unexpectedly, it's a top contender for my game of the year. Download the demo! If you prefer, play the original Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection first. Fans of classic adventure game design will find much to love.
VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action ($14.99)
A repeat appearance on my "best of" lists, VA-11 Hall-A is a personal favorite. Its compelling story, music, aesthetic, and memorable characters make it a standout. The Switch port is excellent, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone. Regardless of your preference for point-and-click adventures, mix drinks and change lives!
The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition ($39.99)
This definitive edition of The House in Fata Morgana is a masterpiece of storytelling. It includes the original game and substantial additions. A pure visual novel, it excels on the Switch. Prepare for a haunting gothic horror experience and unforgettable music.
Coffee Talk Episode 1+2 ($12.99 + $14.99)
While sold separately on the eShop and in physical imports, a North American Switch bundle justifies their inclusion as one entry. Though not reaching the heights of VA-11 Hall-A, Coffee Talk offers a relaxing experience with a charming story, excellent pixel art, and great music. Perfect for coffee lovers and those who appreciate engaging characters.
Type-Moon's Visual Novels: Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and Mahoyo (Variable)
This entry encompasses three titles: Tsukihime, Fate/stay night Remastered, and Witch on the Holy Night (Mahoyo). All are lengthy but rewarding. Fate/stay night is a good starting point for visual novel newcomers, but Tsukihime's remake is highly recommended. Witch on the Holy Night follows as a strong contender.
PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo ($19.99)
PARANORMASIGHT is a surprising gem from Square Enix. The narrative, presentation, and innovative mechanics create a compelling mystery adventure game with memorable characters and striking art.
Gnosia ($24.99)
Described as a sci-fi social deduction RPG, it's best categorized as a hybrid adventure and visual novel. Identify the Gnosia and vote to put them into cold sleep. The gameplay loop is engaging, and despite some RNG elements, it's a fantastic experience.
Steins;Gate Series (Variable)
Spike Chunsoft's Steins;Gate series, particularly Steins;Gate Elite, is crucial for introducing newcomers to visual novels. While I await the original version, Steins;Gate Elite is highly recommended, especially for anime fans. Playing other titles in the series is best done after experiencing the original story.
AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES and nirvanA Initiative (Variable)
A collaboration between Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi and No More Heroes artist Yusuke Kozaki, these two games are exceptional. The story, music, and characters are top-notch. While a Zero Escape port is desired, these titles are well worth the price.
NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD ($19.99)
A game best experienced blind, NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD shifts between disturbing horror and heartwarming moments. It follows a young streamer's life and offers multiple endings. A memorable and unique adventure.
Ace Attorney Series (Variable)
Capcom has brought the entire Ace Attorney series to Switch. The series is beloved for a reason, and newcomers should consider The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles as a strong entry point. The entire series is now accessible on a single handheld.
Spirit Hunter: Death Mark, NG, and Death Mark II (Variable)
The Spirit Hunter trilogy blends horror adventure and visual novel elements with a striking art style. While some content is grotesque, the localization and storytelling are excellent.
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim ($59.99)
A blend of adventure and real-time strategy, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is a sci-fi masterpiece. The Switch port is excellent, especially in handheld mode on the OLED screen. A must-play.
This list exceeds a typical "top 10," reflecting my desire to include all the games I highly recommend. The inclusion of entire series reflects their overall quality. If you have suggestions, please comment below. I'm always seeking more exceptional stories in these genres. A separate list of otome games is in progress.
