Stardew Valley: A Complete Guide To Enchantments & Weapon Forging

By StellaFeb 01,2025

This guide details the Volcano Forge in Stardew Valley 1.6, explaining how to enhance tools and weapons. The forge, located in Ginger Island's Volcano Dungeon, uses Cinder Shards and gemstones/crystals for upgrades.

Obtaining Cinder Shards:

Cinder Shard Node

Cinder Shards are crucial. Acquire them by:

  • Mining Cinder Shard nodes (pink-orange specks) in the Volcano Dungeon.
  • Enemy drops (Magma Sprite, Magma Duggy, Magma Sparker, False Magma Cap – varying drop rates).
  • Fishing ponds with 7+ Stingrays (2-5 shards, 7-9% daily chance).

Cinder Shards are a resource, not gemstones; they can't be duplicated in the Crystalarium.

The Mini-Forge:

After achieving Combat Mastery, craft a Mini-Forge:

  • 5 Dragon Teeth
  • 10 Iron Bars
  • 10 Gold Bars
  • 5 Iridium Bars

It functions identically to the Volcano Forge.

Weapon Forging:

Weapon Forging

Forge weapons up to three times using gemstones (10, 15, then 20 Cinder Shards per forge):

  • Amethyst: +1 knockback per forge.
  • Aquamarine: +4.6% crit chance per forge.
  • Emerald: +2/+3/+2 speed per forge (stacks).
  • Jade: +10% crit damage per forge.
  • Ruby: +10% damage per forge.
  • Topaz: +1 defense per forge.
  • Diamond: 3 random upgrades (10 Cinder Shards).

Best Weapon Upgrades: Emerald & Ruby (damage & speed) are generally optimal for combat. Topaz & Amethyst prioritize survivability.

Unforging Weapons: Place the weapon in the left slot, select the red X to remove all forging (recovering some shards, but not the gemstone). Enchantments remain.

Infinity Weapons:

Infinity Weapons

Upgrade Galaxy Sword, Dagger, or Hammer into Infinity Weapons using 3 Galaxy Souls (20 Cinder Shards per soul). Forged upgrades and enchantments are retained.

Galaxy Souls: Obtain via Mr. Qi (40 Qi Gems), Big Slime drops, Island Trader (10 Radioactive Bars), or occasional drops from Dangerous Monsters (after killing 50).

Enchantments:

Enchantments

Enchant tools/weapons (excluding slingshots) using a Prismatic Shard and 20 Cinder Shards. Effects are random; re-enchant for a different result.

Weapon Enchantments: Artful, Bug Killer, Crusader, Vampiric, Haymaker (Bug Killer and Crusader are generally most useful).

Innate Enchantments: Use a Dragon Tooth for additional weapon enchantments (Slime Slayer, Crit Power, Attack, Speed, Slime Gatherer, Defense, Weight).

Tool Enchantments: Twelve enchantments exist, each tool having specific compatible options (Auto-Hook, Archeologist, Bottomless, Efficient, Fisher, Generous, Master, Powerful, Preserving, Reaching, Shaving, Swift). See the original text for details on each.

Best Tool Enchantments: The best enchantment depends on playstyle; Bottomless (Watering Can) and Shaving (Axe) are generally highly valued.
