Star Wars Outlaws Underperforms, Outsold by Jedi: Survivor
Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws, the franchise's first open-world title, is facing significant challenges. Released in August 2024, the game has underperformed commercially, falling short of Ubisoft's sales projections and causing a sharp drop in the company's stock price. This underperformance is further highlighted by reports indicating that it's being outsold by 2023's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
Negative player reception, particularly concerning the combat and stealth mechanics, contributed to the game's poor sales. While initial reviews were generally positive, subsequent updates aimed at addressing these issues proved insufficient to significantly boost sales. In Europe, Outlaws recently ranked only 47th in 2024's best-selling video games.
Several factors explain Jedi: Survivor's superior performance. As a sequel to the successful Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, it benefited from established brand recognition and critical acclaim upon its April 2023 release. A later update expanding its availability to PS4 and Xbox One further fueled its popularity.
Conversely, Outlaws has struggled to gain traction, despite ongoing post-launch support. Massive Entertainment has released DLC expansions, including "Star Wars Outlaws: Wild Card" featuring Lando Calrissian, and the upcoming "Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate's Fortune" featuring Hondo Ohnaka, scheduled for Spring 2025. However, these efforts haven't been enough to reverse the game's underwhelming sales trajectory. The disparity in sales between the two titles underscores the challenges of launching a new open-world Star Wars game, even with the established franchise's appeal.
