Sonic Galactic: A Sonic Mania-Inspired Fan Game
Sonic Galactic, developed by Starteam, is a captivating Sonic the Hedgehog fan game echoing the spirit and style of the critically acclaimed Sonic Mania. Capitalizing on the enduring popularity of Sonic Mania – a 25th-anniversary celebration of the franchise – Sonic Galactic delivers a nostalgic experience for fans of classic Sonic gameplay and pixel art.
Unlike a potential Sonic Mania sequel, which never materialized due to shifts in Sonic Team's artistic direction and the developers' own pursuits, Sonic Galactic fills a void in the hearts of many. While Sonic Superstars offered a modern 2D Sonic experience with 3D graphics and co-op, Sonic Galactic embraces the timeless appeal of pixel art, reminiscent of titles like Sonic and the Fallen Star.
Initially unveiled at the 2020 Sonic Amateur Games Expo, Sonic Galactic has been in development for at least four years. The game imagines a hypothetical 32-bit Sonic title, evoking the feel of a Sega Saturn release. It blends authentic retro 2D platforming with unique twists.
Gameplay and Characters:
The second demo, released in early 2025, introduces new playable characters alongside the classic trio of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. Fang the Sniper (from Sonic Triple Trouble) joins the fight for revenge against Dr. Eggman, while Tunnel the Mole, a character originating from Illusion Island, makes his debut.
Each character boasts unique paths within each zone, mirroring the branching level design of Sonic Mania. The special stages maintain a strong Mania influence, challenging players to collect rings within a time limit in a 3D environment. A typical playthrough focuses on Sonic's stages (approximately one hour), with other characters offering shorter, individual levels. The total playtime for the demo is estimated at a couple of hours. The game's charming pixel art and classic gameplay make it a must-play for any Sonic fan.
