Will Smith: I Turned Down Inception Role

By CamilaJun 06,2026

For the first time ever, Will Smith has opened up about why he passed on starring in Christopher Nolan's Inception, sharing his reasons on the record.

Inception, the 2010 sci-fi heist thriller, delves into the intricate layers of dreams. The plot follows a team who infiltrate a target's subconscious to steal corporate secrets. As they journey deeper into these dreamscapes, the mission descends into a perilous nightmare.

Reports indicate Nolan initially approached Brad Pitt for the lead role, followed by Will Smith, before Leonardo DiCaprio ultimately signed on. Now, 15 years after the film's release, Smith has publicly explained his decision to decline the project.

"I don't believe I've ever shared this publicly before," Smith stated during an interview with UK radio station Kiss Xtra.

"Chris Nolan presented Inception to me first, and I simply didn't grasp the concept. I've never admitted that aloud. Reflecting on it, movies that explore alternate realities are often difficult to explain in a pitch. But I do regret passing on those two films."

The "those two" remark refers to Smith famously turning down the role of Neo in 1999's The Matrix, a decision he has frequently discussed. Revealing he also declined Inception because he "didn't get it" adds another major blockbuster to the list of roles Smith regrets missing. Inception went on to earn a massive $839 million worldwide and remains one of Leonardo DiCaprio’s most defining performances.

Inception's iconic spinning totem ending is famous for leaving the reality of the final scene ambiguous. However, in 2023, Nolan clarified that the key message is that Cobb, finally reunited with his children, no longer cares about the distinction, which is why he walks away without checking if the totem falls.

While Smith has often joked about his Matrix rejection, even referencing it in a song with Big Sean, this marks his first time addressing Inception. Despite admitting the regret, Smith is no stranger to sci-fi success, having starred in classics like Independence Day, Men in Black, and I Am Legend.
