Hideki Kamiya, renowned game director behind classics like Okami and Devil May Cry, embarks on a new chapter. After a 20-year tenure at PlatinumGames, he's launched Clovers Inc., a new studio dedicated to fulfilling a long-held ambition: an Okami sequel.
A Sequel 18 Years in the Making
Kamiya's passion for completing the Okami narrative is well-documented. He publicly expressed his desire for a sequel to Capcom, even jokingly recounting his unsuccessful attempts. Now, with Clovers Inc. and Capcom's publishing support, that dream becomes reality.
Clovers Inc.: A New Beginning
The name "Clovers Inc." pays homage to both Clover Studio, the original Okami developer, and Kamiya's early Capcom teams. This new venture, a collaboration with former PlatinumGames colleague Kento Koyama, prioritizes a shared creative vision above sheer size. Koyama leads the business side, allowing Kamiya to focus on game development. The studio currently employs 25 people, with plans for measured growth.
Departure from PlatinumGames
Kamiya's departure from PlatinumGames, a company he co-founded, surprised many. While he remained tight-lipped about specifics, he alluded to a philosophical divergence regarding game development. The opportunity to create Okami 2 with Koyama, who shares his creative vision, proved irresistible.
A Softer Side?
Kamiya's online persona is known for its bluntness. However, recent events suggest a shift. He publicly apologized to a fan he previously insulted, expressing remorse and even unblocking some previously blocked users. While his signature wit remains, a more receptive attitude towards fans is emerging.
