'The Last of Us' Season 2 to Include Intense Content Excised from Game

By HannahFeb 20,2025

HBO's The Last of Us Season 2 will resurrect cut content from the original The Last of Us Part II video game, according to showrunner and Naughty Dog studio head, Neil Druckmann. Druckmann revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the show will feature "pretty brutal" scenes, including elements from the "Lost Levels" partially restored in the PlayStation 5 remaster. These levels, including Jackson Party, The Hunt, and Seattle Sewers, offer a range of tones, from the relatively calmer party scene and boar hunt to the intense horror of Ellie's encounter with monsters in the Seattle sewers.

The inclusion of this cut content promises intense viewing. Druckmann hinted at the inclusion of a previously unshown, "pretty prominent" character, mirroring Season 1's handling of Frank.

Season 2 introduces numerous new characters, including Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Tati Gabrielle as Mel, among others. Catherine O'Hara's role, however, remains a mystery.

With the premiere of Season 2, Episode 1 slated for April, answers to these mysteries are imminent. However, some plot threads may remain unresolved for a longer period. HBO intends to adapt The Last of Us Part II beyond a single season, unlike Season 1's complete adaptation of the first game. Showrunner Craig Mazin has stated that Part II's extensive narrative necessitates this approach. Although a Season 3 renewal is pending, Season 2 concludes with a "natural breakpoint" after seven episodes.
