Ryukishi07, creator of Higurashi and When They Cry, has shared insights about writing Silent Hill f, comparing the game's supernatural and psychological elements to "salad dressing."
While anticipation builds for Silent Hill f - the franchise's first new mainline entry since 2012 - the writer had been notably quiet until his recent appearance at Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles.
During a panel discussion with producer Motoi Okamoto and composer Akira Yamaoka, Ryukishi07 explained he adopted a different approach from his usual literary style, crafting a narrative centered around a core theme.
As reported by Famitsu via Automaton, the writer described how players might initially struggle to separate supernatural from psychological horror elements, which blend seamlessly at first. "Much like salad dressing," he noted, "these components eventually separate - becoming distinct yet part of the same experience."
The unusual analogy might surprise fans, but Ryukishi07 emphasized that while players uncover facts about Ebisugaoka's mysterious town, ample room remains for personal interpretation - a hallmark of Silent Hill's appeal.
The developer also revealed Silent Hill f explores profound human experiences beyond horror, including themes of love and sorrow, continuing the series' tradition of rich emotional storytelling.
Konami has confirmed Silent Hill f features an original standalone narrative, making it accessible to newcomers while maintaining continuity with the franchise's essence, though shifting the setting from America's east coast to 1960s Japan.
Producer Okamoto highlighted enhanced combat mechanics, striking audiovisual contrasts between beauty and terror, and psychologically disturbing puzzle elements that intensify the horror experience.
The story follows teenager Hinako Shimizu as she navigates societal pressures in 1960s Japan. Notably, the game earned Japan's first 18+ rating for the series following its March reveal trailer.
Silent Hill f launches September 25 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
