Nintendo Urged to Pull Game Pending Switch 2 Backwards Compatibility

By EthanJan 01,2026

Limited Run Games has requested that Nintendo suspend sales of the Gex Trilogy on the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop until there is a clear timeline for deploying a patch to resolve a backwards compatibility issue affecting the game.

In a social media announcement, Limited Run explained that the patch has been delayed due to approval holdups related to the recent US public holiday, and is not expected to roll out this week. As a result, the publisher has asked Nintendo to temporarily remove the game from the store.

Limited Run noted that several of its Switch 1 titles encountered backwards compatibility problems on the Switch 2. While a recent firmware update resolved issues for the "majority" of affected games, the Gex Trilogy remained problematic. The developer subsequently prepared a patch to address the problem, but is still awaiting approval for its release.

"Because we don't yet have clarity on when the Switch 2 firmware will fix the Gex Trilogy issue, we submitted our own patch last week," Limited Run explained. "Approval for the patch has been delayed due to the Juneteenth holiday, but we anticipate it will be released early next week."

"In the interim, we have requested that Nintendo remove the game from the Switch 2 eShop. We appreciate your patience as we collaborate with Nintendo to resolve these compatibility problems."

The publisher also recommended that players verify whether other Limited Run titles are now running correctly on the Switch 2 and provided the following list:

The Gex Trilogy includes all three platforming adventures featuring the wisecracking gecko: Gex, Gex: Enter the Gecko, and Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko. The collection launched on June 16 for PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, Xbox Series, and last-generation consoles. The original Gex debuted in 1995 on the 3DO before being ported to the PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and PC. Sequels followed in 1998 and 1999, but publisher Square Enix has not released a new Gex title since — which has heightened anticipation for this remastered collection.

Although the Nintendo Switch 2 is off to a strong start, with 3.5 million units sold, an analysis of the console's launch week sales presents a varied picture of how well third-party games are performing compared to Nintendo’s own titles.
