The long-awaited sequel to the beloved adventure game, Ōkami, announced at last year's Game Awards, has finally shed a little light on its development. While details remain scarce, IGN's recent interview with the project leads revealed some key information.
Confirmed by Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, the sequel is a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's storyline. When pressed about the identity of the celestial figure shown in the TGA trailer, director Hideki Kamiya enigmatically replied, "I wonder...", but Hirabayashi swiftly confirmed it to be Amaterasu.
While this confirmation likely surprises no one, the sequel's relationship to Ōkamiden, a Nintendo DS title starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu, has been a point of much discussion. Ōkamiden, released to mixed reception due to its platform and the absence of key original team members like Kamiya, will be addressed. Hirabayashi stated, "We know that there are fans out there that like the game... and we also know the feedback... With that, we also have the sequel now that... is a continuation from the story of the original base Ōkami."
The original Ōkami's ending, however, inherently suggests a sequel, irrespective of Ōkamiden's narrative. Amaterasu and another character embark on a new, unexplored journey, leaving ample room for fresh challenges and adventures.
Despite the exciting news, further details remain elusive. The team confirmed the sequel is in its very early stages of development, with the early announcement driven by pure enthusiasm. According to Hirabayashi, this also means substantial time will pass before any further updates are released.
