The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has become a focal point in the ongoing debate about Nintendo's pricing for the Switch 2 and its games. Some fans argue that the company behind Mario could learn a few things about video game pricing from Bethesda.
Oblivion Remastered, developed by remake specialist Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, features an extensive list of visual and feature upgrades. It runs at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, as expected, but other enhancements are more substantial. Improvements span from leveling systems and character creation to combat animations and in-game menus. Additionally, there's plenty of new dialogue, a fully functional third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology. These changes have been well-received by fans, with some believing Oblivion Remastered should be classified as a remake. Bethesda, however, has clarified its decision to label it a remaster.
The base Oblivion game is priced at $50 and includes all originally released DLC. It's an impressive, high-value package that, for many, highlights the perceived shortcomings of Nintendo's Switch 2 game pricing.
Many are drawing comparisons between Oblivion Remastered and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, which costs $70, or The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - Nintendo Switch 2, priced at a staggering $80. Existing owners of the original Switch versions can upgrade for $10, and Nintendo Switch Online subscribers upgrade for free. However, Nintendo's standalone pricing has generated significant online backlash, particularly considering the jump to $80 not only for Tears of the Kingdom but for several other Switch 2 titles.
The situation is even more challenging for Zelda. IGN has confirmed that Breath of the Wild's Nintendo Switch 2 Edition does not include the Expansion Pass, requiring an additional $20 payment to access the DLC on Switch 2 for those who don't already own it.
The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Breath of the Wild offers enhanced visuals and performance, achievements, and support for the new "Zelda Notes" service in the Nintendo Switch Online app. If you already own Breath of the Wild on the Switch, these features are not automatically added; you must upgrade to the Switch 2 Edition to access them.
For new buyers, the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Breath of the Wild is available for $70—$10 more than the original launch price (effectively the cost of the base game plus the upgrade). This version still doesn't include the DLC Expansion Pack, so accessing that content requires another $20. This brings the total to $90 for the complete Breath of the Wild Nintendo Switch 2 experience.
Paying a whopping $90 for the most up-to-date version of a game that originally launched in 2017 on the Wii U feels steep, especially considering Mario Kart World's unprecedented $80 price tag and the Nintendo Switch 2 console itself costing $450.
Meanwhile, Oblivion Remastered—which many argue qualifies as a remake—includes all DLC for just $50. It's easy to see why Nintendo appears less favorable in these comparisons.

"Nintendo will look at them and say ‘those guys could have made $30 extra,' " joked redditor Cultural_Writing2999. "It's hard for them to learn much of anything over the sound of all that money being printed," geldonyetich added.
Nitendo can learn from Bethesda

This sentiment reflects the idea that Nintendo is setting these prices for Switch 2 games because they believe consumers will pay them. As Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, explained to IGN: “Nintendo is charging this price because they feel they can and that people will pay."
