Pokémon Presents on February 27th: No Switch 2 Pokémon Titles Expected
Pokémon enthusiasts anticipating announcements regarding Switch 2 Pokémon games during the upcoming Pokémon Presents on February 27th may be disappointed. While the Pokémon franchise has a long history on Nintendo consoles, its debut on the Switch 2 appears to be further off than initially speculated.
Although Nintendo hasn't officially unveiled the Switch 2, leaks suggest an imminent reveal. These leaks depict a more powerful, larger iteration of the original Switch, confirming backward compatibility with existing Switch titles and account carryover.
Despite the inevitable arrival of new Pokémon games on the Switch 2, the February 27th Pokémon Presents will reportedly focus on titles developed for the original Switch. These games will, however, be playable on the Switch 2 due to its backward compatibility. Industry insider Jeff Grubb supports this claim.
Focus on Existing Switch Titles and Pokémon Legends: Z-A
The upcoming Pokémon Presents will likely feature updates on ongoing live-service titles like Pokémon GO and Pokémon Trading Card Game Live. Significant attention is expected to be given to Pokémon Legends: Z-A, slated for release on the original Switch this year. While a teaser trailer showcased Lumiose City, returning Pokémon, and the return of Mega Evolutions, details remain scarce.
Rumors suggest another main-series Pokémon game is in the works for this year, separate from Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Generation 10. Speculation points towards Pokémon Black and White remakes or a new Let's Go installment. These, too, are allegedly destined for the original Switch, not the Switch 2. This suggests that Generation 10 games may be the first major Pokémon titles exclusive to the Switch 2.
Following Historical Precedent
This strategy aligns with the Pokémon franchise's history of prioritizing consoles with larger install bases. Similar to the release of Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 for the original DS instead of the 3DS, a similar approach seems likely.
However, until official confirmation arrives during the February 27th Pokémon Presents, this remains speculation.
