Nintendo confirms proactive measures to prevent Switch 2 launch shortages and combat scalpers, stating: "We are making preparations."
Following its latest earnings report, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa addressed concerns about avoiding the supply issues that plagued the original Switch launch in 2017 during an interview with Nikkei (translated by VGC).
What exactly do these preparations entail? Primarily, the company plans massive production numbers for the Switch 2. Nintendo previously emphasized sufficient manufacturing capacity as its primary anti-scalping strategy.
The original Switch's March 2017 launch suffered from supply constraints that enabled price-gouging resellers. However, Furukawa assured in July 2024 that the successor launch strategy would differ significantly.
"Our fundamental approach to preventing resales remains ensuring adequate production capacity - a policy unchanged since last year," Furukawa explained. "We're also evaluating additional region-specific measures within legal boundaries."
The executive confirmed resolution of previous semiconductor shortages that impacted Switch production: "Component availability won't significantly affect manufacturing of the successor model."
Nintendo has scheduled a Switch 2 Direct presentation for April 2nd and will host global Switch 2 hands-on events.
Commenting on February 4th, 2025 about declining Switch sales, Furukawa denied any meaningful correlation with anticipated Switch 2 purchases: "We don't believe purchase postponement significantly impacts current sales. Performance remains strong in the console's eighth year, though below targets."
Furukawa reaffirmed ongoing Switch support post-Switch 2 launch "contingent on demand," noting upcoming 2025 releases including Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond for the current system.
