News

Guilty Gear Strive Arrives on Nintendo Switch in January 2025

Arc System Works is bringing the fighting action of Guilty Gear Strive to the Nintendo Switch on January 23rd! The Switch version will include 28 characters and boasts rollback netcode for online play. While cross-play is unfortunately absent, it promises a solid offline experience and online battles with fellow Switch players. Having enjoyed the game on Steam Deck and PS5, I'm definitely looking forward to this release. Check out the official website for more details.

Reviews & Mini-Views

Bakeru ($39.99)

Let's be clear: Bakeru isn't Goemon/Mystical Ninja. While developed by some of the same team, the similarities are superficial. Managing expectations is key; Bakeru is its own unique experience. Good-Feel, known for charming platformers like Princess Peach: Showtime!, delivers a delightful, polished adventure.

The story follows Issun and Bakeru, a tanuki with shape-shifting abilities, as they traverse Japan, battling foes, collecting cash, and uncovering secrets. The over sixty levels offer an engaging, if not always memorable, journey. I particularly enjoyed the collectibles, often reflecting the unique aspects of each Japanese location – a fun way to learn something new.

The boss battles are a highlight, showcasing Good-Feel's knack for creative and rewarding encounters. Bakeru takes creative risks, with some elements working better than others, but the successes far outweigh any shortcomings. The game's charm is infectious; I found myself enjoying it despite its flaws.

The Switch version suffers from inconsistent framerates, fluctuating between 60fps and noticeable dips during intense moments. While personally not a major concern, those sensitive to framerate issues should be aware.

Bakeru is a highly endearing 3D platformer with polished gameplay and inventive elements. While framerate inconsistencies on Switch hold it back slightly, and those expecting a Goemon clone will be disappointed, it's a highly recommended title.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Star Wars: Bounty Hunter ($19.99)

A product of the prequel trilogy era, Star Wars: Bounty Hunter tells the story of Jango Fett, Boba Fett's father. You'll hunt down targets, utilizing a variety of weapons and the iconic jetpack. While initially engaging, the repetitive gameplay and dated mechanics (a product of its 2002 release) become apparent. Targeting and cover mechanics are flawed, and level design feels cramped.

Aspyr's remaster improves visuals and performance, and the control scheme is enhanced. However, the unforgiving save system remains; be prepared for potential restarts. The inclusion of a Boba Fett skin is a nice touch.

Star Wars: Bounty Hunter holds a nostalgic charm for fans of early 2000s games. While rough around the edges, its earnest action and improved remaster make it worth considering for those seeking a retro experience. Otherwise, it might prove too janky.

SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5

Mika and the Witch’s Mountain ($19.99)

Clearly inspired by Studio Ghibli, Mika and the Witch’s Mountain casts you as a rookie witch tasked with delivering packages to earn money for broom repairs. The vibrant world and charming characters are highlights, but performance issues on the Switch, including resolution and framerate drops, detract from the experience. It likely plays better on more powerful hardware.

The gameplay, while dedicated to its core mechanic, can become repetitive. However, the overall charm and quirky characters make it enjoyable for those who appreciate the concept.

Mika and the Witch’s Mountain is a charming game with a distinct Ghibli influence. Performance issues on Switch are a drawback, but its core gameplay loop and world are appealing enough for those willing to overlook some technical imperfections.

SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5

Peglin ($19.99)

A pachinko roguelike, Peglin has evolved significantly since its early access release. This 1.0 version features refined gameplay, strategic orb aiming, and a wealth of content. The challenge is significant early on, but the gameplay loop is rewarding and addictive.

The Switch port performs well, though aiming feels less smooth than on other platforms. Touch controls are a viable alternative. Load times are longer than on mobile and Steam. The inclusion of in-game achievements is a welcome addition.

Peglin is a fantastic game for fans of the genre. While some balance issues persist, its unique blend of pachinko and roguelike mechanics, combined with full use of Switch features (rumble, touchscreen, button controls), makes it a must-have. -Mikhail Madnani
