The Nintendo Switch 2 has been officially revealed, offering a fresh look at its upgraded design. Alongside redesigned Joy-Cons, which now double as a mouse thanks to optical sensors, the Switch 2 introduces a key quality-of-life improvement that may have gone unnoticed in its debut trailer.
Unlike the original Nintendo Switch, which featured a single USB-C port on the tablet’s underside, the Switch 2 doubles this to two USB-C ports.

This upgrade is more significant than it seems. The original Switch’s single port forced users to rely on often unreliable adapters for multiple accessories, sometimes risking damage to the console due to incompatible specifications.
The original Switch claimed USB-C compliance, but its port used a unique, complex specification that third-party docks and accessories struggled to match without causing issues like burnt-out pins.
With the addition of a second USB-C port, the Switch 2 is likely to adopt true USB-C standards, enabling seamless support for accessories right out of the box. As USB-C, particularly Thunderbolt, has matured, it now supports high-speed data transfer, 4K display output, and even connections to external GPUs for compact PCs or laptops.

USB-C standards have evolved significantly since 2017, and Nintendo’s inclusion of a second port signals broader compatibility. This could support external displays, networking, data transfer, and high-wattage power delivery.
The bottom port, likely used with Nintendo’s official dock, may offer more advanced functionality for connecting multiple accessories.
The top port, ideally, will also support fast charging, display output, and additional accessories. Including a second USB-C port without full functionality would be illogical, so this addition promises versatility, like using external power banks alongside other accessories—a major upgrade over the original Switch.
For more details on the Switch 2, including its enigmatic C button, we’ll need to wait for Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct on April 2, 2025.
