Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Functionality: Evidence and Speculation
Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons may possess a previously unseen feature: the ability to function as computer mice. While the practicality of this mode for game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative controller designs.
The evidence comes from Famiboards user LiC, who analyzed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data, a source of numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024, recently revealed entries for polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended for "game console handles." The presence of "mouse soles," a term typically associated with computer mice, strongly hints at mouse-like functionality in the Switch 2's Joy-Cons.
Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were identified. These numbers are not found in public component databases, suggesting they represent unreleased products. The listed size, 90 x 90mm, is large enough to cover the back of the Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly.
Not a First for Handhelds
While novel for Nintendo, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented in the handheld market. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already offers this functionality with its right controller, which transforms into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even provides a plastic housing to improve surface glide. This similarity, coupled with rumors of magnetic rails on the Switch 2 (a feature also present on the Legion GO), further fuels speculation about the Joy-Con's potential mouse mode.
