Hori’s Piranha Plant camera for Nintendo Switch 2 offers a resolution of only 480p, significantly lower than the 1080p of Nintendo’s official Switch 2 camera.

The UK My Nintendo Store detailed the resolutions for both cameras:

Hori’s Piranha Plant camera, officially licensed by Nintendo, is priced lower than Nintendo’s $49.99 camera. Notably, the Switch 2 supports its official camera accessory or any compatible USB-C camera. Both cameras are set to launch with the Switch 2 on June 5.

The Piranha Plant camera offers unique features: its webcam detaches from the pot for placement directly on the Switch 2, enhancing portability compared to Nintendo’s camera. The plant’s mouth can also close to cover the lens.

Nintendo fans expressed disbelief at the Piranha Plant’s 480p resolution. “How is a 480p camera even made in 2025?” asked redditor Ramen536Pie. “That’s got to be tougher than building a 1080p one.”

“That’s honestly comical,” quipped LizardsoftheGhost. “Maybe this was meant for the Wii U era.”

“Isn’t 480p basically illegal now?” remarked pokemonfitness1420.

At last week’s Nintendo Direct, Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2’s GameChat feature, activated by pressing the C button on the new Joy-Con.

Players can view each other playing the same or different games and, with a camera, see one another. A built-in microphone ensures reliable audio across various gaming setups. The C button’s chat menu serves as a comprehensive multiplayer hub, potentially marking Nintendo’s strongest online feature in years.
