Nicolas Cage has issued a strong warning against the use of artificial intelligence in acting, asserting that actors who allow AI to influence their performances are heading towards "a dead end." In his Saturn Awards acceptance speech for Best Actor (Dream Scenario), Cage argued that AI cannot authentically portray the human condition.
Variety reports Cage's speech, where he expressed his concerns about the emerging AI landscape. He stated, "I am a big believer in not letting robots dream for us. Robots cannot reflect the human condition for us." He further emphasized that even minimal AI manipulation of an actor's performance will ultimately compromise artistic integrity and truth, replacing it with purely financial motives.
Cage believes the purpose of art, including acting, is to reflect the human experience through a deeply personal and emotional creative process, a process he believes AI is incapable of replicating. He warned that allowing AI to take over this process will result in art that lacks heart, depth, and genuine human connection, ultimately presenting "life as robots tell us to know it." He urged actors to protect themselves from AI interference, advocating for authentic and honest self-expression.
The filmmaking community is also divided on the issue. While Tim Burton expressed his unease with AI-generated art, describing it as "very disturbing," Zack Snyder has advocated for embracing AI technology rather than resisting it.
