MultiVersus to Conclude Operations After Season 5
Warner Bros. Games has announced the impending closure of MultiVersus, its popular platform fighter. The game's final season, Season 5, will launch on February 4, 2025, and mark the end of online play on May 30, 2025.
Season 5: A Final Curtain Call
The official MultiVersus Twitter (X) account confirmed the shutdown on January 31, 2025. A blog post on the official website elaborated, stating that Season 5 will be the game's last content update. This final season will introduce two highly anticipated characters: Aquaman (DC) and Lola Bunny (Looney Tunes), both unlockable through gameplay.
Following the conclusion of Season 5, MultiVersus will be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store. No official reason for the shutdown has been provided.
Offline Play: A Lasting Legacy
While online servers will be deactivated, MultiVersus will retain a local gameplay mode. Players can enjoy offline matches against AI or with up to three friends. To access this offline mode, players must download the latest game version between February 4th, 9 AM PST and May 30th, 9 AM PDT. The game will automatically create a local save file linked to the player's online account, preserving all earned and purchased content.
Real-money transactions ceased on January 31, 2025. Any remaining Gleamium (in-game currency) can be used until the end of Season 5.
A Retrospective: From Beta to Closure
MultiVersus launched its public beta in July 2022, quickly gaining popularity as a free-to-play platform fighter. Following a relaunch in May 2024 with significant updates (including new characters, rollback netcode, and a PvE mode), the game faced ongoing challenges, including technical issues and declining player numbers. Reports indicate a 70% player decrease on PlayStation consoles in July 2024.
At its closure on May 30th, 9 AM PDT, MultiVersus will boast a roster of 35 playable characters. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed gratitude for the community's support. MultiVersus remains available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until the shutdown date.
