Monster Hunter Wilds has burst onto the scene, drawing over 1 million concurrent players on Steam despite its mixed reviews. Delve into the game's impressive performance on PC and the challenges it currently faces.
Monster Hunter Wilds Faced Numerous Issues at Launch
Monster Hunter Wilds Received Mixed Reviews on Steam
Despite garnering mixed reviews on Steam, Monster Hunter (MH) Wilds has impressively attracted over 1 million concurrent players. According to SteamDB, MH Wilds reached an all-time peak of 1,384,608 players, eclipsing the records set by its predecessors, with MH World peaking at 334,684 and MH Rise at 231,360. However, the game currently holds a 'Mixed' rating on its Steam page, with only 57% of the 54,669 reviews being positive. Common criticisms focus on the game's poor optimization for PC and other performance-related issues.
Capcom Responds to PC Performance Issues
In response to the negative feedback on MH Wilds' PC performance, Capcom has taken action to address these concerns. On February 28, 2025, Monster Hunter's official support account, Monster Hunter Status, used Twitter (X) to communicate solutions to the various issues players are facing.
The post directed players to MH Wilds' support website, which offers detailed answers to common problems. Capcom's suggestions for resolving these issues include updating video/graphics drivers, ensuring the latest Windows updates are installed, and performing a clean installation of the video driver set. If these steps don't resolve the issue, Capcom further advises, "Please also try the troubleshooting steps on the Official Monster Hunter Wilds Troubleshooting & Issue Reporting Thread on the Steam community page, as they contain more detailed and additional steps that may help resolve your issue."
Game-breaking Bug Blocking Story Progress
A significant bug is currently preventing players from progressing through the story. A crucial NPC is missing from their designated spot, blocking progress in Main Mission: Chapter 5-2 A World Turned Upside Down. Monster Hunter Status acknowledged this issue on Twitter (X) on March 2, 2025, and confirmed they are actively working on a solution.
Additionally, there have been reports of issues with the "Grill a Meal" and "Ingredient Center" features not unlocking despite meeting the necessary criteria, as well as problems accessing the Smithy. The development team has responded promptly, releasing hotfixes and updates across various consoles and platforms to address these concerns.
Character Editing Locked Behind Microtransactions
In MH Wilds, players must purchase microtransactions to modify their characters' appearances and those of their Palicos. The game offers the Monster Hunter Wilds - Character Edit Voucher Three-Voucher Pack, allowing players to redo their character creation process three times for $6.00, available across all digital storefronts.
While players can still alter their hair, eyebrow color, facial color, makeup, and clothing, any changes beyond these require purchasing a voucher. The same applies to the Palico companion, which requires a separate voucher pack. Alternatively, a $10 voucher provides three edits for both the player's character and their Palico. Although these microtransactions were not part of the testing phase, Capcom had previously announced their inclusion in the final game. As a goodwill gesture, Capcom is offering a single character edit voucher for free.
