Marvel's Simu Liu Champions Sleeping Dogs Movie Adaptation

By JacobFeb 22,2025

Simu Liu, the star of Marvel's Shang-Chi, is reportedly attempting to revive the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reported Liu's response to a fan on X/Twitter, stating he's actively "working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen."

The project, initially announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen attached to star, was quietly shelved a year later. Yen recently confirmed its cancellation, citing years of effort and investment, ultimately thwarted by the unpredictable nature of Hollywood. His statement highlighted the challenges of navigating the film industry's complexities.

Liu's involvement offers a surprising resurgence of hope for fans of the critically acclaimed 2012 video game. The game, which follows detective Wei Shen's undercover mission within a Hong Kong Triad, garnered positive reviews (including an 8/10 from IGN). However, despite its success, no sequels or further adaptations materialized until Liu's recent intervention.

The success of Liu's efforts in securing the rights and moving the project forward remains uncertain. Nevertheless, his public commitment represents a significant development for the long-dormant Sleeping Dogs film adaptation.
