Marvel Rivals Season 1 Update Disables Mods

Marvel Rivals Season 1 Update Cracks Down on Mods

The Season 1 update for Marvel Rivals has reportedly disabled the use of custom-made mods, a popular pastime among players since the game's launch. While not explicitly announced, players discovered this change upon logging in, finding their customized character skins reverted to defaults.

NetEase Games, the developer, has consistently maintained that mod usage violates the game's terms of service, even for cosmetic modifications. Previous actions against individual mods, including a controversial Donald Trump mod, foreshadowed this broader crackdown. The Season 1 update appears to employ hash checking, a technique verifying data authenticity, effectively preventing mod functionality.

The Season 1 update, released January 10, 2025, following a successful launch in December 2024, introduced significant content including playable Fantastic Four characters (Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman initially, with Thing and Human Torch to follow), a new Battle Pass, maps, and a Doom Match game mode. The unexpected mod ban, however, has disappointed some players who enjoyed creating and sharing customized content. Several creators have expressed their frustration online, sharing unreleased mods that are now unusable.

While some mods contained controversial content, including nude character skins, the primary motivation behind NetEase's action likely stems from the game's free-to-play business model. Marvel Rivals relies heavily on in-app purchases of character bundles featuring cosmetic items. The availability of free cosmetic mods could severely impact the game's profitability. Therefore, the ban on mods, though upsetting to some players, is a strategic move to protect the game's financial viability.
