Marvel Rivals Issues Apology for Wrongful Bans

NetEase, the developer of Marvel Rivals, issued a public apology for mistakenly banning a significant number of innocent players. The mass ban, intended to target cheaters, inadvertently affected numerous players utilizing compatibility layer programs on non-Windows operating systems.

Mac, Linux, and Steam Deck Users Affected

On January 3rd, the Marvel Rivals community manager revealed on Discord that players using compatibility layers (such as those needed for Mac, Linux, and Steam Deck) were incorrectly flagged as cheaters. This resulted in unfair bans for legitimate players. NetEase has since rectified the situation, lifting the bans and apologizing for the inconvenience. They encouraged players to report actual cheating and outlined the appeal process for wrongful bans. The Steam Deck's Proton compatibility layer, known for triggering anti-cheat systems, appears to have been a contributing factor.

Calls for Universal Character Bans

Separately, the Marvel Rivals community is advocating for a change to the in-game character ban system. Currently, character bans—a feature allowing players to remove specific characters from selection—are only available at Diamond rank and above. Many players, particularly those in lower ranks, express frustration at the lack of this feature, arguing it would improve gameplay balance and allow for more strategic team compositions. One Reddit user highlighted the disparity, stating that higher-ranked players benefit from the ban system while lower-ranked players struggle against overpowered characters.

The community believes that implementing character bans across all ranks would enhance the game for all players, providing a more balanced and enjoyable experience. NetEase has yet to publicly respond to these concerns.
