Rebuilding Frostpunk with Unreal Engine
11 bit Studios, creators of Frostpunk, surprised fans with the reveal of Frostpunk 1886, a remake of the original title powered by Unreal Engine. Announced via Twitter (X) on April 24, the project promises a fresh take on the beloved game.
The remake introduces a new Purpose Path, long-requested mod support, and enhanced features while preserving the essence of the original. In a detailed Steam post on April 24, the developers outlined their vision for the project.
Departing from their in-house Liquid Engine used for the first game, 11 bit Studios is leveraging Unreal Engine 5, inspired by its success in Frostpunk 2. "We aim to elevate the experience with stunning visuals, higher resolution, and the advanced capabilities of Unreal Engine," they explained.
Targeting a 2027 Launch

Frostpunk 1886 is currently in development, with 11 bit Studios aiming for a 2027 release. The studio intends the game to welcome newcomers to the Frostpunk universe while delighting dedicated fans with a replayable experience.
The team also teased future content, including potential DLCs, as part of their plan to release games more frequently than every five years. Meanwhile, fans can look forward to Frostpunk 2’s free major update on May 8, a console release this summer, and more, per the game’s roadmap.
