Shift Up's Goddess of Victory: NIKKE Evangelion crossover fell short of expectations, according to a recent interview with the game's producer. The August 2024 collaboration, featuring Rei, Asuka, Mari, and Misato, missed the mark in several key areas.
The Collaboration's Shortcomings:
The initial designs for the Evangelion characters, created collaboratively by Shift Up and the Nikke team, were deemed too suggestive by Evangelion's creators. Subsequent modifications, while satisfying the licensors, failed to resonate with players. The resulting outfits, while faithful to the source material, lacked the appeal to entice players to acquire them.
Player Feedback and Concerns:
The issue extended beyond the character designs. Players found little incentive to spend on limited-time characters or costumes, particularly given the perceived lack of visual distinction between the new skins and the base models. Asuka's gacha skin, the most expensive option, was criticized for its similarity to her default appearance.
The collaboration's perceived failure is linked to a dilution of Nikke's core identity. Players appreciate the game's distinctive style and strong narrative, but recent collaborations have been seen as uninspired and detracting from this established appeal. The drawn-out nature of the Evangelion event further compounded the negative reception.
Shift Up acknowledges the criticism and promises to incorporate player feedback into future collaborations. Hopefully, this will lead to more engaging and well-received crossover events.
