Discover Nintendo's Ultimate Handheld Gaming Collection

By LaylaFeb 11,2025

A curated selection of retro Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. While Nintendo Switch Online offers a robust GBA library, this list focuses on titles independently released on the eShop. We've chosen ten favorites – four GBA and six DS – presented without ranking.

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. Although the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA iteration is a solid alternative, offering a streamlined experience. A worthwhile comparison piece, and surprisingly enjoyable even for those who typically avoid shooters.

Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

While the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA as a true successor. This side-scrolling action game, while initially rough around the edges, lays the foundation for an excellent series. Start here and explore the subsequent titles at your leisure.

Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A second Mega Man entry, justified by its distinct gameplay from Mega Man Zero. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed, though later installments show diminishing returns.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

From the Castlevania Advance Collection, Aria of Sorrow stands out. For me, it's often preferred even over the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. The addictive soul-collecting system and engaging gameplay make the grinding worthwhile. A truly exceptional third-party GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

Originally a cult hit with limited distribution, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge gained wider recognition through its DSiWare release. This title solidified Shantae's popularity, leading to continued appearances across console generations. Interestingly, its GBA predecessor is slated for release soon.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a GBA game in origin (though unlocalized then), Ace Attorney is a delightful adventure game blending investigations and dramatic courtroom scenes. The humor and storytelling are strong, with the first game being particularly exceptional.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick offers a unique gameplay mechanic. As a ghost, you manipulate objects to save people and uncover the mystery of your death. A captivating and highly recommended title.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

A top-tier Nintendo DS game, best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without access to a DS. A truly exceptional game in every aspect.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

From the recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection, Dawn of Sorrow shines due to improved button controls over the original touch controls. However, all three DS Castlevania games in this collection are highly recommended.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

A franchise that translates well to the Switch, though originally designed for the DS/3DS. Etrian Odyssey III is the largest of the three, offering a substantial RPG experience despite its quirks.
