Benedict Cumberbatch reveals Doctor Strange's pivotal role in the MCU's future, while skipping a key installment. In a recent interview with Variety, Cumberbatch confirmed Doctor Strange's absence from Avengers: Doomsday, explaining that the character's arc doesn't align with that particular storyline. However, he will be "quite central" to the events of its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. Cumberbatch even hinted at a third standalone Doctor Strange film in development.
He elaborated on the character's ongoing potential, stating that Marvel Studios is open to exploring various avenues within the comic lore to further develop Strange's complex and multifaceted personality. "He’s a very rich character to play," Cumberbatch noted. "He’s a complex, contradictory, troubled human who’s got these extraordinary abilities, so there’s potent stuff to mess about with."

Regarding Avengers: Doomsday, Cumberbatch's absence is attributed to narrative considerations. The film, directed by the Russo Brothers, will feature Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom and reportedly Chris Evans, continuing the multiverse storyline and potentially including Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter.
The MCU's Phase 6 begins with The Fantastic Four: First Steps this July. Avengers: Doomsday is slated for release on May 1, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027.
