How to Unlock Animals in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Each time Naoe or Yasuke interact with a cat or dog in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, if it’s a breed they haven’t encountered before, that animal becomes unlocked for inclusion in the Hideout. Players can collect various dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens, including the stray pup from the pre-order DLC quest “Thrown to the Dogs.”

In addition, Yasuke has the unique ability to unlock small animals by painting them. While exploring the wilds of Japan, you may come across rabbits, fox kits, tanukis, and monkeys. By documenting these creatures through painting, you can also add them to your Hideout collection if desired.

For those interested in farm animals, vendors scattered throughout Japan offer options such as oxen and goats for purchase using mon. These can be added to your Hideout just like any other companion animal.

How to Add Animals to the Hideout in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

To begin customizing your Hideout, visit the Hiroma and approach the bench where Hideout upgrades are managed. Once inside the customization menu, switch to Build Mode.

Navigate to the wolf icon located on the far right side of the menu. This section displays all the animals you’ve unlocked, categorized under Dogs, Cats, and Other.

Choose the animal you wish to place in your Hideout. You’ll then be shown an overhead view of the Hideout map, allowing you to select an available grid space for placement. Although you can position animals wherever you prefer, keep in mind that once placed, they will roam freely within the Hideout when you return to gameplay. So don’t be surprised if they’re not exactly where you left them!

With the exception of the special "Thrown to the Dogs" puppy, players can add multiple copies of any unlocked animal type. However, there is a limit to the total number of animals allowed at one time, so plan your additions accordingly. If you ever want to change things up, simply remove existing animals in Build Mode and replace them with new ones.
