Amazon's Android Appstore to Close its Doors
Fans of the Amazon Appstore on Android will soon need to find an alternative. TechCrunch reports Amazon is shutting down its Android app store on August 20th, 2024.
This marks the end of a decade-long run for the store, a significant period considering the competitive landscape. While this news may be disappointing for developers and users, Amazon assures the Appstore will remain operational on Fire TV and Fire Tablets.
According to Amazon's support page, Android apps previously installed from the store may not receive future updates or support.
The Ironic Timing and Underlying Reasons
The closure is particularly noteworthy given the recent rise of alternative app stores. Amazon's Appstore, however, never achieved widespread popularity. This lack of success can be attributed to several factors, including a lack of compelling incentives for users and developers, unlike the successful free games programs offered by competitors such as the Epic Games Store.
This situation serves as a reminder that even large corporations can't guarantee the longevity of their services.
