Japanese Mahjong: A Digital Adaptation
This app delivers a faithful recreation of Japanese-style Mahjong rules. Tile selection is managed via an on-screen slider; tapping the slider discards a tile. The objective remains the same: complete four melds and a pair to win.
Example hand: [1, 2, 3][6, 6, 6][6, 7, 8][N, N, N][4, 4]
Note that certain hand combinations are invalidated by actions like Chi, Pon, and Open Kan. Pay close attention to hand composition when using 1 and 9 in Chi and Pon. Japanese Mahjong rules require a minimum number of winning hands.
A Reach can be declared for a potential 1000-point hand, but this option is unavailable after performing Chi, Pon, or Open Kan. Closed hands yield higher scores.
A "Lost Hand" occurs when a player is waiting for a winning tile but cannot win off an opponent's discard because they previously discarded that winning tile. Even with a Lost Hand, self-draw wins are possible. However, the key characteristic of a Lost Hand is that it prevents winning via Ron from an opponent's discard.
Winning (Ron) is never possible with a tile that the player has previously discarded. Strategic reasoning is crucial to win from opponent discards.
