Application Description

Joe the Monkey from The Money Mammals is on a journey to become money-smart, and understanding the difference between needs and wants is a key part of that adventure. For young learners, especially those in pre- and early elementary school, grasping this concept is crucial for developing financial literacy skills.

Needs are things that Joe the Monkey must have to survive and live a healthy life. These include basic necessities like food, water, shelter, and clothing. For Joe, a need might be bananas to eat and a tree to call home. Needs are non-negotiable; they are essential for well-being and survival.

On the other hand, wants are things that Joe the Monkey desires but can live without. These are the extras that make life more enjoyable but aren't necessary for survival. For Joe, a want could be a colorful hat to wear or a shiny new toy. Wants are great, but they should come after needs are met.

By learning to differentiate between needs and wants, Joe the Monkey—and young children—can make smarter decisions about how to use their resources. This skill helps in budgeting, saving, and understanding the value of money, setting them on the path to becoming financially responsible.
