Hnefatafl is a classic Scandinavian board game with variants enjoyed across medieval Europe long before the arrival of chess. In these Tafl games, two uneven armies clash: the invading black force aims to capture the white king, while the defending white troops strive to protect their monarch and secure his escape.

Frequently known as the Viking Game, Hnefatafl evokes tales such as the Muscovite invasion of Sweden or Viking raids on Britain. Whatever the backdrop, the central goal remains unchanged: the thrilling pursuit of the king.

Although the rules are simple, Hnefatafl offers deep strategic possibilities and rewards clever tactics. Trap your opponent’s pieces, plan several moves ahead, set ambushes, and force a surrender. Will you seize the king for riches and renown? Or can the king’s guard withstand the onslaught and ensure his safe flight?
