Application Description
Preparation for children going to the hospital can be a challenging and emotional experience, especially when a parent is diagnosed with cancer. To address this, "HC And - When mother or father has cancer" has been developed through a collaboration between the Oncology Department R, H.C. Andersen Children and Youth Hospital, Odense University Hospital, along with hospitalized children, their families, and 10:30 Visual Communication.
Designed specifically for children aged 4-7 years, HC And is a patient information resource aimed at preparing and reducing anxiety in young children who may be unfamiliar with many hospital terms. This tool introduces the youngest children, their families, and friends to the general cancer patient course at the hospital.
The information in HC And is delivered through a child's voice and engaging animations in the "Learning through play with tablet/mobile phone/touch screen" genre. This approach is particularly effective for children in this age group, who learn and process information best through play and concrete examples. As relatives of cancer patients, these children can quickly become overwhelmed with information, so HC And is structured with short, age-appropriate sequences that allow "newbies" to start their learning journey here.
The content of HC And includes seven staged stories that address common questions about cancer, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. These resources are invaluable for hospital staff, providing them with an educational tool to establish a shared understanding with the child.
HC And is available for free download to everyone, making it accessible to all who need it.

This app is such a helpful resource for families going through tough times 🧡. Makes explaining cancer to kids a bit easier, though it could use more interactive elements.
